Great question! After teeth whitening, there are a few simple steps you can take to help maintain your results:
- Maintain good dental hygiene: brushing with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day and don’t forget to floss every day as well. This ensures your teeth stay healthy.
- Watch what you eat: limit how much you consume of foods and drinks that stain teeth e.g. tea, coffee, dark beer, red wine, green tea. If you do consume these, we recommend using a straw, to minimise their contact with your teeth
- Don’t smoke (or vape either) – it not only stains teeth and it causes dental problems like gum disease (red, puffy gums definitely ruin the whitest of smiles!)
- Regular dental check-ups: having regular checkups and professional cleaning with you dentist. They can remove staining and help you to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy.
- Consider ‘touch ups’ – over time teeth will darken. So long as you still have your whitening trays, you can get from your dentist packs of the whitening gel to refresh your whitening. We usually say to do this every 6-12 months.
FYI whitening toothpastes don’t whiten teeth (despite whatever they are saying on Tik Tok ;). You are better to save the extra money you spend to get a special ‘tooth whitening’ toothpaste and save that money towards a professional whitening treatment. You will get far better results.
